The Waupaca Chess Team started as a club during the 1995-1996 school year as a group of students who played during lunch and study halls in Mr. Hiddemen's room. The Club first competed interscholastically with other Valley 8 Conference schools during the 1999-2000 schol year, and then entered the Northeast Wisconsin Chess Association during the 2000-2001 school year. That year the JV team finished 4th in the State Scholastic Tournament and things grew from there. The team won back to back Division 3 State Titles in 2004 and 2005 and in 2006 took first place in the Unrated Division at the United States Chess Federation's National High School Tournament.
